RIVER OAKS BICYCLE/PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PROJECT UPDATE

Field Activity Update

Wednesday, February 1, 2006 through Tuesday, February 28, 2006
(Scheduled activities based on weather and conditions permitting).

WHAT:
Crews will:

  • Finalize retaining wall installation (concrete cure and structure backfill)
  • Complete the east levee grade for concrete paving, stairway and handrail installation
  • Continue paving of the west and east levees, including striping, markers and signs
  • Install stone veneer on east levee retaining walls
  • Install pre-cast benches on levees
  • Install erosion control measures
  • Begin miscellaneous punch-list and clean-up.

WHERE:
Guadalupe River East Levee (River Oaks Cul-de-Sac) and West Levee (adjacent to Mansion Grove Apts).

WHEN:
Wednesday, February 1, 2006 through Tuesday, February 28, 2006
(with weekend and extended work hours as needed)
7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

WHO:
Stevens Creek Quarry, Inc. (SCQ)

WHY:
To provide access across the Guadalupe River, connecting Lick Mill Boulevard to River Oaks Parkway.

The majority of the construction work is scheduled to be complete by the end of March 2006. VTA will plan an opening event to celebrate the opening of the River Oaks Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge. Details will follow soon.

NOTE:
Both ends of the levees, on the east and west side of the Guadalupe River, will remain closed through February 2006. Construction crews will continue back filling/grading along with concrete and asphalt paving required for the pre-fabricated bridge levee nodes and associated levee retaining walls.

Construction Update

WHAT:
This project proposes to construct a bicycle/pedestrian bridge over the Guadalupe River to connect neighborhoods with North First Street. This project will facilitate bicycle and pedestrian access between the two sides of the river and will provide convenient access to the River Oaks Light Rail Station.

Construction activities include but are not limited to:
· Excavation
· Removing trees
· Concrete piling
· Installing steel bridge
· Paving of levee
· Constructing concrete ramp and retaining walls

WHY:
The purpose of this project is to meet the demand for safe and efficient pedestrian and bicycle pathways in the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara for both recreational and commuting use.

WHEN:
Construction activities began in June 2005.

General construction hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., five days a week, weather and conditions permitting. (with various weekend and extended work hours as needed)

WHERE:
At the intersection of River Oaks Parkway and Guadalupe River.
