More Information

Vasona light rail extension project map

Project Overview

The Vasona Light Rail Project is a 1.6-mile extension of the existing Mountain View to Winchester line.

The original Vasona Corridor LRT Project was proposed to extend from downtown San Jose through the City of Campbell to the Town of Los Gatos with nine new stations and four Park & Ride lots. The first portion of the project was completed in 2005 and extended light rail to the Winchester Station in Campbell.

The 1.6-mile extension would complete the originally planned project. The extension would begin at the existing Winchester Station in Campbell and continue within the VTA right-of-way to Los Gatos. The project would be implemented in two phases based on funding and projected ridership.

Project Features

Phase 1

  • Construction of a double set of light rail tracks at the Winchester Station
  • Expansion of parking capacity at the Winchester Station
  • Construction of a new Vasona Junction Station
  • Construction of a Park & Ride lot and end-of-the-line facilities at the new Vasona Junction Station
  • Lengthening of six existing station platforms along the Vasona Corridor alignment (Winchester, Campbell, Hamilton, Bascom, Fruitdale, and Race) to accommodate longer trains)

Phase 2

  • Construction of a new Hacienda Light Rail Station with an optional Park & Ride lot

Access for Persons with Disabilities

The extension will be fully accessible in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Operations

Travel time from the Vasona Junction Station to the San Jose Convention Center Station will be approximately 22 minutes. Expected daily ridership for the two-station extension is 1,600 riders.

Capital Cost

$175 million
