Safety

FTA data show that transit is among the safest ways to travel. From 2003 to 2008 transit bus travel resulted in 0.05 deaths per 100 million passenger miles, compared to 1.42 deaths for motor vehicles. Amtrak and commuter rail also had low fatality rates of 0.03 and 0.06 per 100 million passenger miles, respectively.

VTA makes safety a top priority and is always evaluating processes, procedures and features of our system to improve safety and to adapt to changing safety needs. This section or our website is dedicated to educating the public on some of the safety features and programs that are in place to help ensure we are operating safely and what riders, pedestrians and motorists can do help ensure their own safety.

Try VTA’s Mobile App - VTAlerts.

At VTA, we know that our riders are sometimes the first to observe safety concerns, suspicious activities and medical emergencies, so VTA has developed a new app for the iPhoneAndroid and the iPad. By downloading the FREE, VTAlerts app, you will have the ability to call 911 in the event of an emergency or instantaneously report safety concerns directly to VTA Transit Security while traveling on our system. The “test” function even allows you to try out the app prior to being witness to a real emergency situation.

VTAlerts allows you to report the following:

  • Crime in Progress
