In an effort to make commuting easier for people who bike and ride, VTA has installed bike lockers throughout its bus and light rail system. VTA now provides 500 bike lockers at light rail and Caltrain stations, Park & Ride lots and transit centers for the use of transit riders. These are both mechanical locker and eLockers as described below.

About 80% of the lockers are mechanical lockers using a key and are assigned to one person each. There is no charge for the bike locker rental; however, a $25 refundable security key deposit is required. If you are interested and would like to apply for a bike locker, please call (408) 321-7520 or e-mail your request to bikelockers@vta.org. Please include your name, address, phone and fax numbers, as well as the desired locker location. VTA will send you an application.

Unfortunately, demand for bike lockers exceeds the supply at most locations. To address this problem, VTA is transitioning from the current one-locker-per-person system to a Smart Card key whereby a pool of lockers is available on a first-come first-serve basis to holders of the Smart Card. The locks on the mechanical lockers are replaced with an electronic lock  that operates with a  SMART card. The lockers function similar to a metered auto parking space which anyone can use on a first-come first-serve basis. The Smart Card is compatible with the eLockers that are located throughout the BART system as well as in Santa Cruz, San Diego and other communities.

VTA began retrofitting existing locks to use the Smart Card in February 2009 at six stations, and subsequently completed two more stations. In Feb 2010, thanks to a grant from the BAAQMD, VTA completed the retrofit of an additional four stations. Currently 12 of our 32 P&R lots are equipped with e Lockers, as indicated below and on the bikeways map.
