The Adopted January 2010 Fare Modifications Accelerated to October 1, 2009

On August 6, 2009, the VTA Board of Directors unanimously agreed to accelerate fare increases. The fare increases, which were planned to go into effect in January 2010, will be implemented beginning October 1, 2009 to partially address the continued decline in revenue. 

Transit agencies across California have been forced to reduce service and increase fares as consequence of the eliminated state funding for transit, as well as declining sales tax revenue. In the third quarter of FY 09, VTA’s sales tax receipts fell by 21 percent from FY08 receipts, representing a loss of $ 6 million versus projections. In total, VTA’s FY 09 sales tax related revenues are currently projected to be $16 million less than previous estimates. This further decline in sales tax revenues exacerbates the FY10 & FY11 budget deficit that VTA has been addressing in recent months. In June, VTA’s projected FY 10 & FY 11 combined budget deficit was $30 million. With the latest decline in sales tax revenue, the projected combined deficit has increased to approximately $57 million.
