Eastridge Transit Center Improvement and Access Plan
The purpose of the Eastridge Transit Center Improvement and Access Plan study was to identify projects that will improve access to the Transit Center from neighboring Environmental Justice communities, and in particular focus on bicycle and pedestrian needs. As Eastridge is the second-busiest transfer point in the VTA system, the study was an opportunity to better understand the barriers facing transit passengers in accessing the Eastridge Transit Center. VTA began the study in July 2009 and completed the final plan on February 26, 2010.
Through extensive community outreach the final plan identifies access improvements to the Transit Center and to bus stops of transit routes that serve the Transit Center. In addition, the plan addresses improvements to the transit waiting and transfer environments. The final plan can be used by VTA, the City of San Jose, and other interested parties to pursue funding opportunities that could implement the design concepts beyond the immediate Transit Center to improve the pedestrian and bicycle environment for the Eastridge area.
Community Open House
On Wednesday, October 21st from 6:00-7:30 p.m., VTA held a Community Open House at the Eastridge Mall to share some initial results from the study. Beginning in July 2009, VTA began circulating the Eastridge Transit Center Feedback Form and meeting with community members to request input on pedestrian and bicycle access issues as well as improvements the community would like to see at the future transit center.
The information provided by the community was incorporated into the analysis, and the Open House was an opportunity to present some of the initial findings and request further input from the community. The following maps were presented at the Open House and show some of the issues identified by the community, as well as suggestions for improvements.

How would you improve the Eastridge transit center? The Santa Clara Valley Transp ortation Auth ority (VTA) is w orking together with the community to identify options f or improving the Eastridge Transit Center and needs your ideas!
VTA wants to hear your ideas on how to accomplish two things:
- Make it easier for community residents to get to the transit center
- Improve the waiting environment for passengers
VTA has plans to add sidewalks and trees to Capitol Expressway and reconstruct the Eastridge Transit Center . What do you think will make the new transit center m ore appealing and encourage people to use transit?
- Improving sidewalks, crosswalks, pathways and bike lanes to make access to the transit center and the Eastridge Mall more convenient and safe
- Modifying the shelter, benches, and lighting to improve comfort while waiting for the bus
- Adding more signage and route information to make bus transfers easier
- Improving bike storage to encourage riders to bike to the transit center instead of driving
- Providing m ore inf ormation in languages other than English to raise awareness of the services at the transit center

Study Objective and Approach
VTA was awarded a grant f or the Eastridge Transit Center Improvement and Access Plan in 2007, through the Caltrans Environmental Justice: Context Sensitive Program. The purpose of the study is to identify projects that improve access to the transit center from neighb oring Environmental Justice communities, and in particular focus on bicycle and pedestrian improvements. As the second busiest transfer point in the VTA system, the study is an opp ortunity to better understand the barriers f or transit passengers in accessing the Eastridge Transit Center . The study will also identify strategies f or raising awareness of the Center’s transit services, particularly in communities where English is not the primary language spoken at home.
Through extensive community outreach the final plan will identify improvements that can be made to the Transit Center to improve access and the transit waiting environment. The final report will summarize the findings from the study and suggest improvements to circulation and waiting areas, enhanced passenger amenities such as; shelter structures, seating, lighting, real time information, bicycle parking, and others as applicable. The report can be used as a reference in any future redesign and rebuild of the Transit Center.
Tell us what you think
VTA wants to know what you think!
