Phase I Guadalupe Express
The Guadalupe Express improvement would introduce express trains in the southern part of the system, making trips faster for riders coming from Almaden and Santa Teresa while improving reliability for passenger on the Winchester line. The Guadalupe Express will require minimal track improvements in the downtown vicinity and will cost an additional $3-$5 million annually to operate. There is currently sufficient market demand to justify this service change but VTA must find additional operating revenues before implementation can occur.

Phase 1 Routing (click for larger image)
- Almaden line integrated into the system. Almaden trains will continue up Guadalupe Highway, through downtown, up North First Street, and end in Mountain View, making all local stops. This routing eliminates the requirement for Almaden riders to transfer at Ohlone/Chynoweth.
- Santa Teresa line provides Express Service to/from downtown. Santa Teresa trains will make local stops between Santa Teresa and Ohlone/Chynoweth, but will then skip stations between Ohlone/Chynoweth and Convention Center. This reduces travel time to/from downtown by 29%.
- Winchester line loops downtown. Winchester trains will no longer travel up North First Street to Mountain View, but instead will loop around downtown San Jose before returning to Winchester. An independent Winchester line should improve the on-time reliability for Winchester riders.
