Milpitas Community Based Transportation Plan (CBTP)

Help Us Improve Transportation in Milpitas!
Fill out a Feedback Form!

How would you improve transportation in your community? We need your help to identify what kinds of transportation projects would help you get from your house to your job, school, stores, church, hospitals or other destinations.

For example:

  • Making bus routes and schedules more reliable
  • Making streets and intersections safer
  • Improving access to jobs, shopping and community facilities
  • Adding bicycle or walking paths

Study Objective and Approach

The Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), along with the City of Milpitas and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, is working together with you and others in the community to develop a Community Based Transportation Plan (CBTP). The resulting Milpitas CBTP will help the VTA and community identify future transportation improvements.

Bus Service Proposal

Through input received from Milpitas residents at outreach events, through suggestion boxes placed around town and focus groups, VTA staff heard some of the following concerns regarding bus service in Milpitas:

  • High cost of fares and passes
  • Lack of adequate east-west service
  • Inconvenient connections to shopping area at McCarthy Ranch
  • Need for direct service between north Milpitas  and Fremont/BART

The first map below shows existing bus service in Milpitas. The second map, titled July 2010 Proposal, suggests new routings for the Local 47 and the Express 180 that responds to community concerns. Some highlights from the proposal:

  • Both the new 47 and the unchanged 46 would be converted to Community Bus, allowing for a reduced fare of $1.25.
  • Community Buses are smaller, distinctively branded vehicles that can operate in areas restricted to conventional 40-foot buses. Standard buses will still be used for school bell times when they are needed most.
  • A service change requiring Community Bus would not be possible before January 2011, when fueling facilities are installed at VTA’s nearby bus yard serving Milpitas.   A July 2010 service change is possible using standard VTA 40-foot buses until January 2011.
  • Combine Lines 33 and 47 into one new Community Bus 47 providing an east-west transit connection thru Milpitas.
  • The new 47 routing would operate on Calaveras Boulevard and serve McCarthy Ranch, Serra Center, the new Milpitas Library, future Valley Medical Center, City Hall, Town Center, future Senior Center (August 2010) and the Great Mall.
  • Subject to an analysis of fare revenue, convert Express 180 to a limited stop route adding stops in Milpitas  on Jacklin at Escuela and on Main Street at the Library.
