BART to Silicon Valley

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is planning to extend the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system to Silicon Valley. The 16-mile BART Extension, also known as the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project, will provide a fast, reliable and convenient transportation alternative to driving in two of the most congested highway corridors in the Bay Area.
With 36% household growth and a 22% increase in jobs expected in Santa Clara County by 2030, BART to Silicon Valley will be critical to ensure economic growth, connecting Silicon Valley residential, employment and education centers to the rest of the region and offering a new transit option for where we live, work and play.
On August 7, 2008, with support from business, labor, environmental, academic and civic leaders, the VTA Board of Directors adopted a resolution to place a measure on the November 2008 ballot asking residents to consider a one-eighth cent (1/8 cent) sales tax to fund operations and maintenance for BART to Silicon Valley. More information from the August 7, 2008 VTA Board of Directors meeting.
