US 101/San Antonio to Charleston/Rengstorff Improvements

Overview

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in cooperation with the Cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto, and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), proposes to modify the San Antonio Road and Charleston Road//Rengstorff Avenue interchanges on United States Route 101 (US 101) in the Cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in cooperation with the Cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto, and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), proposes to modify the San Antonio Road and Charleston Road//Rengstorff Avenue interchanges on United States Route 101 (US 101) in the Cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto. 

  

Objectives

The purpose of this project is to:

  • Improve traffic operations on the freeways and local roadways in the vicinity of the US 101/San Antonio Road and US 101/Charleston Road/Rengstorff Avenue.
  • Improve bicycle, pedestrian, and transit accessibility and connectivity at these interchanges.  

 

Project Features

The proposed improvements include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Widen US 101 to add auxiliary lanes, as necessary.
  • Widen the existing San Antonio Road and Rengstorff Avenue overcrossing structures or construct new structures over US 101.
  • Modify existing on-ramps and off-ramps at both interchanges.
  • Modify existing local street intersections and upgrade bicycle and pedestrian facilities along San Antonio Road, Charleston Road, and Rengstorff Avenue.
  • Construct other improvements as needed.
