VTA’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce is getting a major boost! The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) has awarded $679,958 to VTA’s Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) through the state’s Apprenticeship Innovation Fund (AIF).
The funding will support 251 apprentices through VTA’s joint training program with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 265, helping employees gain the hands-on experience, technical skills, and mentorship needed to build successful careers in public transportation.
"This opportunity has opened my mind to a whole new way of thinking about mechanics, rail, and problem-solving.” said Isaiah Nunley, VTA apprentice.
VTA’s program was among 67 apprenticeship programs statewide selected to receive a combined $15.9 million in funding to expand career opportunities and strengthen California’s workforce.
Through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on training, and mentorship, VTA’s apprenticeship program provides employees with opportunities to develop specialized skills, expand their knowledge, and advance their careers in high-skilled transit roles. The program also helps ensure VTA has the skilled workforce needed to maintain a safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation system.
This investment reinforces VTA’s ongoing commitment to workforce development, creating career pathways and preparing the next generation of skilled transit professionals.
