Nighttime Construction on SR 85 – Noise Reduction Program (July 29-August 18)

What to Expect
VTA and Caltrans will continue nighttime construction work along SR 85 as part of the SR 85 Noise Reduction Program. Work will occur in multiple freeway segments (Locations A–E), with crews rotating through various sites over several weeks.
Work Locations:
Crews will be active along SR 85 between Saratoga Avenue and Snell Road, with work rotating through Locations A, B, C, D, and E.

Workers are painting new lane lines in the center of the freeway, sealing joints between road slabs, and applying a strong, long-lasting road surface coating. |

Crews are testing a new overlay surface, pouring concrete around storm drains, and making improvements to the drainage system. |
C |
Approximately 1.2 miles (6,460 ft) of safety barriers (K-rail) are being installed in the center of the freeway, utilizing both machinery and manual labor. |
D |
Roughly two-thirds (3,560 ft) of a mile of center-divider barriers are being placed. Crews are also installing trash-catching devices and adjusting storm drains. |
E |
Nearly three-quarters (3,800 ft) of a mile of median safety barriers are going in. Workers are also removing old electrical boxes (during the day only) and installing new center-divider barriers. |
Ramp Closures & Detours:
The northbound SR 85 on-ramp at Saratoga Avenue will be closed nightly (8 PM–5 AM). Please follow detour signs.

If you're traveling northbound on Saratoga Avenue:
➡ Continue on Saratoga Ave
⬅ LEFT on Lawrence Expressway
⬅ LEFT on Prospect Rd
➡ RIGHT on De Anza Blvd
⬅ LEFT onto NB SR 85 on-ramp
If you're traveling southbound on Saratoga Avenue:
➡ Continue on Saratoga Ave
➡ RIGHT on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Rd
➡ Continue on De Anza Blvd
⬅ LEFT onto NB SR 85 on-ramp
Impacts on the Public:
- Noise, lighting, and construction activity during night hours
- Occasional lane closures in work zones (night only)
- No full freeway closures are planned currently
- Daytime work limited to minor electrical removals (Location E: near Lubich Drive in Mountain View)
Motorists are advised to reduce speed, follow posted signage, and drive with caution through active construction zones.
Additional Information
The project team is coordinating with Caltrans on drainage and utility layout approvals. Further updates will be shared as needed. Construction schedules are subject to change based on weather and field conditions.
