How Will VTA Handle the Crowds for World Cup?

This month, Silicon Valley will welcome the world. And VTA is here for the ride.

The Bay Area Host Committee expects approximately 260,000 visitors from outside the region to attend FIFA World Cup 2026 matches and related events throughout June and early July. With six matches scheduled at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium (aka Levi's Stadium) and fan events taking place across the region, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is ready.

From operators and mechanics to dispatchers, customer service representatives, maintenance crews, and security personnel, every VTA employee plays a role in helping riders get to matches, watch parties, work, and home safely and smoothly.

Transit Will Play a Major Role

Transportation planning estimates show that more than 14,700 spectators per match day will use VTA services, going to and coming from the stadium, making public transit one of the primary ways fans will travel to and from the stadium. (That's 30,000 riders!)

Estimated Match-Day Transportation Modes

With tens of thousands of people expected to travel through the region on match days, VTA has developed a comprehensive operating plan focused on safety, reliability, and customer service.

More Service Where It's Needed Most

To accommodate increased demand around San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, VTA will add buses to routes serving the stadium area and key transit hubs.

Before Matches

Up until four hours before the beginning of a match, VTA will run regular service, with a reconfigured Blue Line going to Old Ironsides.

Four hours before matches begin, light rail service will convert to a temporary revised configuration to handle the maximum capacity of fans going to the stadium. The blue and orange lines from south san jose and downtown, and Alum rock and Milpitas will stop at Lick Mill, close to the stadium.  The Orange line from Mountain View will stop at Great America.

Additional buses will be staged at:

  • Mountain View Station
  • Milpitas BART Station
  • Downtown San José

A special bus bridge will operate between Baypointe and Old Ironsides stations to provide additional capacity and flexibility when needed.

During the game, service from downtown and East San Jose reverts to regular passenger focus, with the Blue line going to Baypointe.  A bus bridge between Baypointe and Old Ironsides will deliver passengers running late to the game or transport non-game passengers to the west bound orange line.

After Matches

To help move fans efficiently after the final whistle, contingency buses will be positioned at:

  • Lick Mill Station
  • Old Ironsides Station

These resources will allow VTA to quickly respond to crowds and keep passengers moving.

Trains will move passengers going to Milpitas BART and Downtown from the Lick Mill station, and those going to Mountain View to connect with Caltrain, will depart from Great America Station. The sidewalk between Great America and Lick Mill will be open to pedestrians, in contrast to Super Bowl 60.

Late night VTA service will run from 2 hours after the match ends until the end of the service day (around 1 am.)

100 Transit Ambassadors Ready to Help

For many visitors, this may be their first experience riding transit in Silicon Valley.

That's why VTA will deploy approximately 100 Transit Ambassadors throughout the system during the tournament.

Ambassadors will help riders:

  • Navigate stations and transit centers
  • Find the correct bus or light rail line
  • Purchase fares and passes
  • Answer questions about schedules and connections
  • Access stadium and event transportation information

Their goal is simple: make transit easy and stress-free for every visitor and resident.

Information at Riders' Fingertips

VTA has updated its website with dedicated FIFA World Cup transportation information, making it easy for visitors and residents to plan their trips. www.vta.org/worldcup

Affordable Travel Options

VTA and Caltrain have partnered to offer convenient transit passes that allow visitors to explore the region while traveling to and from matches. A regular one-way ticket on VTA is $2.50.

These options provide an affordable alternative to driving and parking while allowing visitors to experience everything Silicon Valley and the Bay Area have to offer.

A System-Wide Effort

Preparing for an event of this magnitude takes teamwork across every department at VTA.

From planning service enhancements and training ambassadors to maintaining vehicles and providing customer support, employees throughout the agency have been working for months to ensure a successful tournament.

Welcoming the World

The FIFA World Cup is more than a series of soccer matches. It's an opportunity to showcase Silicon Valley and demonstrate how public transit connects communities, supports major events, and helps move people safely and efficiently.

When the world arrives this summer, VTA will be ready.

Whether you're heading to a match, a fan festival, a watch party, or your daily destination, VTA is proud to help get you there.
