Public safety is a priority during construction of the VTA Eastridge to BART Regional Connector light rail extension (EBRC) in East San Jose. After nearly two years, the project is on time and on budget, but there is a need for some very important reminders for residents who travel in the area to ensure public safety.
One critical issue unfolds when motorists exceed the 35 mph speed limit on Capitol Expressway throughout the construction zone. This puts residents, other motorists, and construction workers at risk.
Even though contractors have installed ample road, construction, and speed limit signage along the construction zone, motorists continue to exceed the speed limit. Reminder: Fines for traffic violations in a construction zone can be $1000 or more.
According to reports by the San Jose Police Department, there have been multiple crashes on Capitol Expressway near the project and at intersections with Tully Road, Ocala Avenue, and Story Road. These crashes were not related to the EBRC Project.
Another critical issue that jeopardizes public safety occurs when pedestrians cross at locations where signage clearly indicates they should not. On the south side of Capitol Expressway at the Story Road intersection, between the AutoZone and the Chevron gas station, there are no designated pedestrian paths, signs clearly indicate that crossing is prohibited and detours are provided.
The EBRC Project team and its contractors are ensuring adequate signage, lighting, and access. We strongly urge motorists, pedestrians, and others traveling through the construction zone to comply with safety warnings and recommendations, follow the signs and obey the laws.
