A recent collision between a VTA light rail train and a road vehicle is a reminder for motorists to take a moment to familiarize themselves with the rules when driving near VTA light rail tracks. Unlike in many other cities, light rail trains often run alongside regular traffic, meaning trains and vehicles are sharing the road, especially at intersections.
Whether you are a Bay Area local or visiting for the FIFA World Cup, one rule is especially important: in California, motorists and cyclists may only make a left turn or U-turn across VTA light rail tracks when a dedicated green left-turn arrow is illuminated.
Each year, dozens of motor vehicles are involved in accidents or near misses with VTA light rail trains. In many cases, these incidents could have been avoided if the motor vehicle driver had followed these tips when driving near light-rail tracks in Santa Clara County.
We want everyone to have a pleasant experience in the Bay Area, so keep these important safety reminders in mind when driving:
- Wait for the green arrow. Never turn across the tracks while traffic is moving. Left turns and U-turns are only permitted when the dedicated green arrow is displayed.
- Look both ways. Light rail trains can travel in either direction. After one train passes, check again before turning; another train could be approaching from the opposite direction.
- Stay focused. Put your phone away and lower the volume of your music so you can hear train bells, horns, and warning signals.
- Keep the tracks clear. Never stop, stand, or double-park on the tracks, and make sure your vehicle can completely clear the crossing before proceeding.
- Watch for pedestrians. Pedestrians are typically present in areas near light rail stations.
