Light Rail Track Construction Work
VTA’s Light Rail System Gets a Major Summer Upgrade
09/08/2025

VTA’s light rail system — now nearing 40 years in service — is getting a well-deserved facelift. As part of our ongoing state of good repair program, crews have been hard at work replacing aging components to keep trains running smoothly, safely, and at full speed.

Construction on Light Rail Tracks

This summer brought two big milestones:

  • Woz Way/San Carlos Junction (June): Crews rebuilt and realigned the track junction and overhead power system. The project also sets the stage for future service options, such as a Santa Teresa to Winchester route.
  • Capitol Avenue/McKee Road (July): The grade crossing was replaced with a new design built to handle both trains and heavy street traffic for nearly 40 years.

These projects are part of a larger light rail rehabilitation effort in 2025 that also included signal upgrades and new crossovers at Champion and Bonaventura stations.

Maintaining the light rail system is an ongoing effort. About 10 out of 200 crossings have been replaced so far, with 8 more already planned for the near term. The next major shutdown will happen in October 2025 in the Mabury area to install a new crossover.

To keep riders moving during shutdowns, VTA bus operators logged over 8,000 hours of bus bridge service this year. Thanks to our riders for your patience while we invest in improvements that eliminate slow zones, boost reliability, and prepare the system for future growth and major events.
