1. Plan Ahead

2. At the Stop
Plan to arrive at the stop at least five (5) minutes prior to the bus arrival time (all times are approximate).
Stand where the driver will be able to see you.
- Check the bus stop sign for route number and destination
- Check the headsign above the windshield
- Indicate you wish to board by standing and signalling to the driver or holding your hand up
- Please have your fare ready before you board
3. Enter the Bus or Train
Use handrails located inside the doors to maintain balance.
Place exact fare in the farebox (drivers do not carry change).
Clipper is an all-in-one transit smart card that you can load transit passes and electronic cash value to use on the Bay Area transit systems.
If you require the lift or assistance securing a wheelchair-designated space, the driver will help you. Just ask. Proceed to your seat promptly.
4. Find Your Seat
Please find a seat promptly. For your comfort and safety, let the driver know if you need extra time to be seated.
If the seats designated for the elderly or persons with disabilities are occupied and you need one, contact the driver for assistance. Passengers cannot be forced to vacate the seats, but they usually do so when asked politely.
The seats in front of the bus and near the light rail doors farthest from the center of the train are designated for senior or disabled passengers.
5. Signal to Request a Stop
Be prepared for your stop. If you're unsure of stop location, notify the driver of your destination.
Signal for your upcoming stop just after the prior stop has been made by pulling the cord on the bus or pushing one of the stop request strips on trains.
The sign at the front of the bus or center of the train will read, "Stop Requested." When the sign is lit, the driver knows to stop at the next stop.
Please only signal once.
Onboard Etiquette
- Be courteous to the driver.
- Limit conversation to key questions.
- The driver is a good resource; if unsure, ask.
- Listen for announcements of upcoming stops.
- The driver can usually alert you to your upcoming stop or give some information on connecting buses.
- Use the trash can in front of the bus. Take your newspapers with you.
- Food consumption is not allowed on VTA buses or trains. Drinks can be consumed if in a sealed commuter mug. No plastic or paper cups.
- Limit phone usage. Radios with headsets are allowed, however keep the volume low to avoid disturbing the operator or other passengers.
