Drivers commuting up the peninsula on northbound I-280 will soon start to notice cones and barricades popping up near the Foothill Expressway exit. The start of construction on the I-280/Foothill Expressway Off-Ramp Improvement Project is scheduled to begin as early as next week.

The project, which straddles the border of Cupertino and Los Altos, involves widening the northbound I-280 offramp to Foothill Expressway from one lane to two lanes to improve traffic weaving between the offramp and the State Route 85 connector. In addition to the widened ramp, there are several other improvements planned. These include:

  • Installation of a new concrete barrier along the ramp
  • New roadway striping and signs
  • Removal and replacement of the existing overhead exit sign and streetlights.

Funded by 2016 Measure B, the I-280/Foothill Expressway Off-Ramp Project is expected to be completed in November 2020.

While most construction work will take place during daytime weekday hours, occasional overnight and/or weekend ramp closures are expected. For construction updates, visit the I-280/Foothill Expressway project page or contact VTA Community Outreach at (408) 321-7575; community.outreach@vta.org.
