On display from August 12 through September 28 at Plaza de César Chávez are eight monumental, magical alebrijes sculptures! Ranging from 20 to 22 feet tall, these sculptures celebrate Mexico's cultural heritage while honoring Zapotec artistic traditions and the craftsmanship of contemporary artisans from Oaxaca to Mexico City. As night falls, these fantastical creatures come alive, glowing with colored light, emphasizing their intricate painted motifs.
VTA makes it easy to experience the magic of Alebrijes en San José. Leave the car at home and plan your trip using the Transit App. VTA’s Blue or Green Light Rail Lines or Bus Routes 22, 23, 64A, 64B, 66, 68, 72, 73, Rapid 500, Rapid 522, or Rapid 523 can get you to the heart of the magic in Downtown San José.
Throughout the run of the exhibition, San Jose Jazz and a variety of community partners will be holding events around the sculptures, including a Culture Fest on September 6 and a Closing Celebration on the exhibition’s final day. These events are inspired by the vibrant traditions of Oaxaca, featuring music, dance, food, and art that celebrate its rich cultural heritage.
