Santa Clara Transit Center - Transit Oriented Development

VTA has partnered with the City of Santa Clara and Republic Metropolitan to develop the Santa Clara Station Caltrain Park & Ride lot. The property consists of two parcels: a 1.7-acre site owned by the City and a 0.7-acre site owned by VTA. Republic Metropolitan, a developer, is proposing a mixed-use Transit Oriented Development that will contain housing, ground-floor retail, and Caltrain parking. The development is expected to stimulate the transit station and provide housing and retail opportunities to the local neighborhood.

This site is in the City of Santa Clara on El Camino Real and Benton Street, next to Santa Clara University. It faces the Santa Clara Caltrain Station and is near the future Santa Clara BART Station. It is currently an underutilized Park & Ride lot for Caltrain, VTA bus, and the Altamont Corridor Express.

Republic Metropolitan is proposing a six-story, 545-bed shared housing development on the City-owned lot and a separate 70-unit affordable housing project on VTA’s parcel. The proposal envisions 15,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor activating both El Camino Real and Railroad Avenue. Republic Metropolitan also intends to replace 100 parking spaces available to transit users within the development. Per VTA’s Transit Oriented Development Policy, the affordable component of this development will be accessible to low income households earning up to 60% of Area Median Income.

Community Outreach

VTA is hosting a Community Meeting on October 24, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the community room of the Santa Clara Police Department. The purpose of this meeting is to introduce the project and provide the community an opportunity to help shape the future development. Staff will provide an overview of VTA’s Transit Oriented Development program, and the developer and their team will share their vision, explain the process, and what to expect going forward.

Republic Metropolitan LLC, intends to submit design drawings to the City of Santa Clara Planning Department after it receives input from the community as part of this outreach effort. VTA staff are also available to speak with you or present this information at your neighborhood meeting. Please contact VTA Community Outreach and we will coordinate this with you.
