Montague Expressway Pedestrian Overcrossing

As a finishing touch to the BART Phase I project, VTA is constructing a 229-foot long steel pedestrian bridge running north-south, crossing over Montague Expressway. Travelers can access it on one side from in front of the new The Edge apartment building at 753 Montague Expressway in Milpitas to the second floor of the existing parking garage at the Milpitas Transit Center on the other side. It will include a staircase leading from the ground floor on both sides of Montague Expressway up to the bridge that will cross above Montague. There will also be elevator access at the north end of the bridge, as well as from the western edge of the parking garage at the Milpitas Transit Center.

The bridge's purpose is to allow pedestrians and those using bikes, scooters, or other means of mobility to cross Montague Expressway safely and efficiently as they go to or from the Milpitas Transit Center.

The below rendering shows approximately what the overcrossing will look like:

Construction

This project is a collaboration between the City of Milpitas, the County of Santa Clara, and VTA. The project includes the construction of other facilities such as water service, drainage, an external sump pit for the elevator, landscape, drainage, Mid-West Guardrail system, lighting, new PG&E electricity services, and CCTV.

Construction will start in September 2019. Construction impacts will include:

  • Closure of the far right lane between S. Milpitas Blvd and Piper Drive in the Westbound direction from September 2019 to October 2020. Other occasional lane closures as necessary;
  • occasional, limited sidewalk access at the Edge apartment building;
  • occasional, limited sidewalk access on the south side of Montague Expressway next to the new Milpitas Transit Center parking garage; and/or
  • 3-4 weekends (over the course of the entire construction period) in which Montague Expressway between Capitol Avenue & South Milpitas Boulevard will be closed entirely from Friday night to Monday morning.

The project is estimated to take 15-16 months to complete. VTA anticipates that it will open in the fall of 2020.
